Angel Reese Drops 23, Takes Over Overtime as Dream Push Liberty to the Brink

Angel Reese is not just surviving her first WNBA playoffs. She is taking them over.

The Atlanta Dream forward scored 23 points on Wednesday night, including six of the team’s 13 points in overtime, as Atlanta edged the New York Liberty 101-98 in Game 2 of the semifinals. The Dream now lead the best-of-five series 2-0 and sit one win from their first WNBA Finals appearance since 2013.

Reese was everywhere when the game was there to be won. After a frantic final two minutes of regulation — Sabrina Ionescu’s deep three cut Atlanta’s lead to one, Marine Fauthoux’s tying triple forced overtime — it was Reese who steadied the Dream. She buried two free throws with 4.3 seconds left in OT after an overthrown Liberty pass, and moments earlier Naz Hillmon’s go-ahead layup with 20.8 seconds remaining had put Atlanta ahead for good.

Jordin Canada matched Reese with 23 points and added eight assists, as the Dream again held off a Liberty team that threw everything at them.

Everything, in this case, was Breanna Stewart. The New York star was brilliant — 35 points, 11 rebounds, and six assists, a WNBA playoff record line — but it was not enough. New York fell to 0-2 as the series shifts to Barclays Center for Game 3 on Friday.

The night capped a remarkable stretch for Reese, who was named AP Defensive Player of the Year earlier in the week and led the league in rebounding for the third straight season. Atlanta won Game 1 92-82. Now the Dream get their first chance to close out a semifinal series on the road.
