Angel Reese Is in the Finals Before Caitlin Clark — and the Playoff Records Tell the Story

Same draft class. Same spotlight. Very different Octobers.

Angel Reese and the Atlanta Dream swept the New York Liberty on Friday night to reach the 2026 WNBA Finals — the first Finals trip of Reese’s career, in her very first postseason. Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever, meanwhile, were eliminated in the first round by Las Vegas.

The head-to-head playoff comparison is now hard to ignore. Reese is 5-0 in the playoffs, averaging 18.0 points and 8.4 rebounds per game this postseason. Clark, across her playoff appearances in 2024 and 2026, is 1-4. She missed Indiana’s 2025 run to the semifinals while sidelined with a groin injury.

Friday’s clincher was a Reese performance, too. She led Atlanta with 22 points in the 85-83 Game 3 win, adding nine rebounds, three assists and two blocks. Over the three-game sweep, she averaged 20.7 points, 7.7 rebounds, 2.0 steals and 2.3 blocks — two-way production from the league’s 2026 Defensive Player of the Year.

Fans noticed the milestone immediately. Social media filled with calls for Reese to get her respect, and with the obvious framing: Reese reached the Finals before Clark did.

Context matters, of course. Indiana reached the playoffs in all three of Clark’s seasons, while Reese never made the postseason in two years with Chicago before her trade to Atlanta. Team situations are not equal, and one October does not settle a career-long debate.

But narratives in this rivalry have always run on moments, and this moment belongs to Reese. She changed teams, anchored a defense, and is now four wins from a championship — while her team has not lost a single game this postseason.

Atlanta opens the Finals at Golden State on Saturday, October 17. However that series ends, Reese has already done something no one can take away: she got there first.
