Caitlin Clark can make logo threes look routine. Her golf swing? That is a work in progress.
During her end-of-season exit interview with the Indiana Fever last Thursday, the 24-year-old guard admitted she recently did something she called “maybe the most unathletic thing” she has done in years: she stepped up to the first tee and whiffed on her opening swing.
“I’ll be completely honest, this is embarrassing to admit,” Clark said, describing the moment to boyfriend Connor McCaffery. She joked that the swing was so rough it was humbling — though she has “since figured it out.”
Clark explained that she had not touched a golf club during the WNBA season. She was managing back issues and focused on keeping her body in good shape through Indiana’s playoff run. The Fever’s season ended Oct. 1 with a first-round loss to Las Vegas, and the layoff clearly showed.
It did not take long to shake off the rust. Clark said she has since been playing much better, including shooting a 46 on the back nine during one recent round. On Monday, she shared a photo of a golf course on her Instagram stories — her first offseason update 11 days after Indiana’s last game.
Her interest in golf is no casual offseason hobby. Clark is an accomplished amateur player who has competed in the pro-am at The ANNIKA driven by Gainbridge at Pelican, the LPGA Tour event named for Annika Sörenstam. She is scheduled to return for this year’s pro-am in November, giving her a few more weeks to sharpen the game she says was once “really rusty.”
Clark closed the season averaging 20.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, 9.7 assists and 1.3 blocks in Indiana’s three-game series against the Aces — a reminder that whatever the scorecard says, the golf course is the one place where she is still the underdog.
