No Punishment for A’ja Wilson After Heated Confrontation With Fan During Fever Loss

A’ja Wilson will not be punished by the WNBA following her confrontation with a fan during the Las Vegas Aces’ first-round playoff loss to the Indiana Fever, USA Today reported on October 1.

The altercation unfolded late in the fourth quarter of the Aces’ 99-89 Game 2 defeat at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. Wilson collided with Fever guard Sophie Cunningham at the top of the key, and Cunningham was assessed the foul. Wilson then walked toward a fan under the baseline, pointing and yelling at him, before teammate Parker-Tyus stepped in to pull her away.

Officials assessed Wilson a technical foul for unsportsmanlike conduct but did not eject her. After an in-game review, the crew determined Wilson had remained in the court area — the “player escape lane” adjacent to the stanchion — rather than entering the stands, and concluded there was no cause for an ejection.

A viral social media post claiming Wilson had been suspended for Thursday’s winner-take-all Game 3 in Las Vegas spread widely ahead of the decider, but the claim was false. Per an October 1 Associated Press report, the WNBA did not suspend or fine the four-time MVP, and she was available to play.

Wilson apologized to her team after the loss. “If I see a man come at me, taking steps towards me and pointing at me — I don’t give a damn what you said,” she told reporters. “You don’t step towards me. You never should, and point at me.”

Wilson finished Game 2 with 22 points and nine rebounds — well below her 38-point, 16-rebound eruption in Game 1 — as Indiana’s defense held her without a field-goal attempt in the entire third quarter.
