The 2026 WNBA playoffs have their signature moment, and it belongs to the team nobody expected.
The New York Liberty swept the top-seeded Minnesota Lynx 2-0 in the first round — an 87-71 demolition in the clincher — to become the first No. 8 seed in WNBA history to eliminate a No. 1. In a league where the top seed had never lost a first-round series, the Liberty simply broke the bracket.
It is a remarkable reversal for a team that began the season as the preseason title favorite and then spent months watching that status slip away. Injuries wrecked New York’s regular season and left them 26-18, stumbling into the playoffs as the last seed. They finished the year 10-5 over their final 15 games with a +6 net rating, hinting that the real Liberty was still in there — and then they unleashed it on the Lynx.
Breanna Stewart led the ambush. The two-time MVP has been arguably the best player of the entire postseason, piling up 55 points, 17 rebounds, 10 assists, four steals and four blocks across the two games against Minnesota. She is averaging 27.5 points, 8.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists in the playoffs, and she has somehow found another gear since winning the FIBA MVP trophy during the international break. She called it her best season in a Liberty uniform, and the numbers agree.
She is not doing it alone. Jonquel Jones answered a quiet Game 1 with a 21-point, 13-rebound double-double in the clincher, Sabrina Ionescu is averaging 15.5 points and 6.5 assists this postseason, and the Liberty shot over 48 percent from the field in the sweep.
What makes New York so dangerous now is what the rest of the league already knew: this core won a championship together in 2024. Stewart, Jones and Ionescu have felt the confetti. The Liberty’s pedigree was always there; it was just buried under a season of bad luck.
Now they get the Atlanta Dream in the semifinals, beginning with Game 1 on Sunday at 2 p.m. ET on ABC. Atlanta won the regular-season series 2-1 and is the higher seed — but some analysts are already backing the Liberty’s series moneyline at +120, betting on experience over seeding.
The Dream should be worried. The Lynx were the best team in basketball all season, and they never stood a chance. Seeding, it turns out, means very little when a healthy Liberty team decides it is time to play.
