Tuesday night in Indianapolis was one of the wildest of Caitlin Clark’s young career — and she wasn’t even sure she could keep going at halftime.
The Indiana Fever guard revealed after the game that she vomited at halftime of Game 2 against the Las Vegas Aces, completely spent from the effort. “To be honest, I threw up everything in my stomach at halftime,” Clark said. She made it clear she wasn’t sick. “It wasn’t because I didn’t feel good or anything,” she explained. “I just was that gassed.”
Then she went back out and put together the first 25-point, 15-assist game in WNBA playoff history.
Clark finished with 27 points, 15 assists and seven rebounds in Indiana’s 99-89 win at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, forcing a winner-take-all Game 3 in the best-of-three first-round series. Her 11 assists in the first half were the most in a playoff half in league history, according to ESPN Insights.
There was drama beyond the box score. Clark was called for a technical foul in the first quarter for arguing a call, and she later admitted she “definitely deserved it.” But the tech lit a fire: the Fever followed it with an 11-4 run that tilted the game for good.
“I was just frustrated,” Clark said. “I felt there were multiple times when it was just getting hit. But I think just keeping it a little more level-headed going into Game 3 (will be important), because I don’t want it to come down to one point and it be a free throw that cost my team.”
Clark also fouled out for the first time in her WNBA career — 93 regular-season games and three playoff games without ever fouling out — picking up her sixth foul with 2:45 left and Indiana up seven. Her teammates finished the job: Kelsey Mitchell scored 26 points, Aliyah Boston added 22, and Indiana’s defense held A’ja Wilson without a field-goal attempt in the third quarter.
ESPN Insights summed it up after the game: Indiana’s offense runs through Caitlin Clark, with the Fever shooting 25-for-31 on shots off her passes through the first two playoff games.
