Caitlin Clark Makes WNBA Playoff History, Forces Game 3 With 27-Point, 15-Assist Masterclass

Tuesday night in Indianapolis belonged to Caitlin Clark.

With her season on the line, the Fever guard delivered a performance for the history books: 27 points, 15 assists, and 7 rebounds in 33 minutes to power Indiana past the defending champion Las Vegas Aces, 99-89, in Game 2 of their first-round playoff series. The win forces a decisive Game 3 on Thursday in Las Vegas and, remarkably, gives Clark the first playoff win of her WNBA career.

It was the kind of night that made the record book. Clark posted 14 points and 11 assists in the first half alone, becoming the first player in WNBA postseason history to record a points-and-assists double-double in a single half. She finished 9-of-18 from the field, including 5-of-11 from three-point range, and was perfect at the free-throw line.

What makes the performance even more remarkable is how it started. At the 8:33 mark of the second quarter, Clark was called for an offensive foul for pushing Aces guard Mai Yamamoto, then drew a technical after appearing to wave off the referee. Instead of rattling Indiana, the call lit a fuse. The Fever went on a 28-14 run after the sequence and never really looked back.

“We were just soft in Game 1, and I think tonight we played a lot tougher,” Clark said postgame. “Just really proud of this group. I think it was a mentality change. You know, obviously, it’s going to take a lot to beat the Las Vegas Aces, defending champions, and they got championship DNA. So we know we have our hands full in Game 3.”

The message going in, she added, was simple: “Be aggressive. Have fun. Smile. There’s no pressure. Leave it all out there.”

Clark wasn’t alone. The rest of Indiana’s Big Three showed up: Kelsey Mitchell added 26 points, and center Aliyah Boston put up 22 points and five assists. “We were able to get stops, and I like I said, the Fever are the best team when we can be able to get stops and then go play in transition,” Mitchell said. “It only happens if we get stops, and I think that’s what happened tonight.”

Defensively, Indiana finally found an answer for reigning MVP A’ja Wilson, holding her to 20 points and nine rebounds after she torched them for 38 points and 16 rebounds in Game 1. Wilson’s frustration boiled over in the fourth quarter, when she picked up a technical after getting into it with a fan following a foul by Sophie Cunningham.

The night wasn’t perfect. Clark fouled out with 2:45 remaining, and she’ll have to walk the foul-line tightrope in Game 3. But her 35th double-double of her career — her second straight in the playoffs — is the statement Indiana needed after a flat Game 1 loss.

There is history at stake beyond the series. The Fever lost to these same Aces in last year’s semifinals with Clark sidelined by injury. Now the rematch comes down to one game on Thursday at Michelob ULTRA Arena.

“If we play like this, I think a lot more wins are coming our way,” Clark said.
